SS Rajamouli's Wife Rama Reveals She Rejected His Marriage Proposal at First: 'I Was a Divorcee'

SS Rajamouli’s wife Rama Rajamouli revealed she hesitated to marry the Baahubali director when he proposed to her. Rama made the revelation on the Netflix documentary, Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli. Rama revealed that she met Rajamouli at her sister’s wedding and they began dating a while after. However, she wasn’t sure about marrying him because she was a divorcee and already had son Karthikeya from the first marriage.

“I met him during my sister’s wedding and he was one amongst many. Nothing striking as far as I remember. He’s my brother-in-law’s brother so that’s how we know each other. It was not a very romantic thing because we were both very matured adults by the time we got into a relationship. But when he proposed, I was actually not ready,” Rama said in the documentary.

Speaking about the wedding proposal, Rama shared, “Again, it’s not a very interesting romantic way. It was a very casual conversation that happened between both of us. And I said, ‘No, no, you must be mad, just go.’ I was a divorcee, I had a son by then so I thought it was meaningless for him to even come up with this thought.”

However, Rajamouli managed to convince Rama and they eventually got married in 2001. “Like everything else, he is very persistent in his things. So finally, after a year or so, we thought we will go ahead with this (decision to marry),” she said. While Rama already had her son from the first marriage, the couple went on to welcome a daughter, who they named Mayookha after their wedding.

Rama has worked closely with Rajamouli on his films. She took on the role of a costume designer in Rajamouli’s films. These include Magadheera (2009), Eega (2012), Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) and RRR (2022). She has also been credited as additional dialogue writer in RRR.
