New Delhi: The Supreme Court has refused to stay the release of Abhishek Chaubey’s film ‘Udta Punjab’. A Punjab-based NGO, Human Rights Awareness Association, on Wednesday had moved the Supreme Court to seek a stay on the screening of controversial film as it projected the agrarian state in a bad light. Moreover, the Bombay HC gave a green signal to the movie without watching it, the NGO argued.

On Thursday afternoon, SC refused to stay the release of the film and allowed the NGO to approach Punjab and Haryana High Court. A similar petition is being here there as well.

Punjab State Women’s Commission has filed an intervention application at HC regarding the release of the film. The hearing of the case is likely to happen around 2pm on Thursday.

Punjab and Haryana HC has appointed an amicus who will see the movie and submit a report on cuts if needed. The SC has questioned the use of expletives in the movies and stated that drug addicts don't use foul language and in it observation stated that the language used in the movie is very obscene.

Featuring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh, ‘Udta Punjab’ has been produced by Balaji Films and Phantom Films. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on 18th June.
