Vikrant Massey, who’s been celebrating the success of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film 12th Fail and winning several awards, opened up about his role as Manoj Kumar. He described the preparation as tough but rewarding, involving weight loss, looking younger, and darkening his skin. In a recent interview with GQ India, the 36-year-old actor, playing a 19-year-old UPSC aspirant, praised director Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s perfectionist attitude.
“I spent almost a year and a half preparing for the film, and the three months prior to the shooting were filled with extensive workshops and reading sessions. I had to lose weight and tan my skin. While tanning, my skin actually got burnt, and I freaked out, thinking we’d have to push our shoot by a couple of weeks,” said Vikrant.
Vikrant shared that when he told Vinod about the skin burn, the director suggested shooting “raw,” saying it as a benefit, as no makeup would be required. “He said that this was a boon and now we wouldn’t need any makeup. We’d be going in raw,” the actor recalled. However, he stresses that more than the physical transformation, it was the emotional journey of the character that was more difficult. “The toughest part of this journey for me, however, was the emotional weight that came with playing this character. Someone who represents the dreams of millions of Indians. To tell a real India story that would resonate with the masses,” he said.
The film became one of the most talked about releases of 2023 and was not only lauded by the critics but also by the audience. Based on the real life journey of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, the film is a motivational watch for everyone. The film has been receiving immense love from all across and also has an IMDb rating of 9.2 out of 10.
