Amar Singh Chamkila was one of the most popular singers of his time. The Punjabi singer was a rage in the 1980s before his sudden death at the age of 27. While Imtiaz Ali just rolled out a film on Netflix based on his life titled Amar Singh Chamkila, with Diljit Dosanjh playing the Punjabi singer, several anecdotes about the late singer have surfaced lately. One of which involves Sridevi. It is claimed that Chamkila’s popularity was such that even Sridevi wanted to work with him.
The claims were made by one of Chamkila’s old friends, Sawarn Sivia, in a YouTube interview. India Today quoted Sivia saying Sridevi was a fan on Chamkila. “Sridevi was a fan of Amar Singh Chamkila. She asked him to be her hero in a film. But he told her, ‘I can’t speak Hindi’. She offered to get him training in the language within a month, but he refused, saying, ‘I will lose Rs 10 lakh in that one month’. Sridevi agreed to do a Punjabi film with him, but it couldn’t happen,” the lyricist claimed.
He also described Chamkila as a ‘gem of a person’. “Amar Singh Chamkila was loved immensely by people in Punjab. People only know Amar Singh Chamkila as a singer. Only a few know that he was a gem of a person. When he once came home in 1986, he saw my mother was sick. He gave me Rs 10,000, and it was a huge amount then,” he recalled.
Meanwhile, the film Amar Singh Chamkila chronicles the life of the iconic Punjabi vocalist who met a tragic end at the age of 27. Diljit recently shared insights into the difficulties he encountered while mirroring Chamkila’s unique vocals. While Diljit plays the lead role, Parineeti Chopra played the role of Amarjot, Amar Singh Chamkila’s wife and singing partner.
