Hema Malini and Dharmendra, renowned as one of Bollywood’s most iconic couples, have captivated audiences with their on-screen chemistry in numerous blockbuster films. The power couple is said to have made a cameo appearance in a film, contributing to its success.
Even before their cameo, Hema Malini and Dharmendra were established names in the film industry, and featuring them together proved to be a winning formula for creating box-office hits. According to reports, the duo has shared the screen in 35 films, including iconic classics like Dream Girl, Sholay, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sharafat, Chacha Bhatija, and Charas.
In 1976, the dynamic couple made a special appearance in the film titled Chhoti Si Baat. This particular film holds significance not just for its cameo but also for the strategic decision taken to enhance its appeal to the audience.
The decision to feature Hema Malini and Dharmendra in the film’s poster as special guests was driven by the fact that Hema Malini’s mother, Jaya Chakravarthy, was one of the producers of the film. It was a calculated move to leverage the popularity and charm of the celebrated couple to boost the film’s prospects at the box office.
The official poster of Chhoti Si Baat prominently showcased Hema Malini and Dharmendra, giving them more space and visibility. This strategic placement aimed to attract audiences by capitalising on the couple’s star power. However, this move also raised eyebrows, with some critics suggesting that it may have overshadowed the lead couple in the film.
The film, directed by Basu Chatterjee, featured Amol Palekar, Vidya Sinha, Asrani, and Ashok Kumar in pivotal roles. Produced by BR Chopra under the banner of BR Films, Chhoti Si Baat boasted music composed by Salil Choudhary. It hit the theatres on January 9, 1976, and emerged as a superhit, receiving acclaim for its narrative and performances.
It’s worth noting that Chhoti Si Baat is an official remake of the British film School For Scoundrels, released in 1960. The film garnered six nominations at the Filmfare Awards, securing a win for Best Screenplay.
