When RD Burman And Gulzar Had Disagreements While Producing This Song
RD Burman found it difficult to come up with a tune for a song while working with Gulzar.

Late RD Burman is regarded as one of the most illustrious musicians in Indian cinema, having given evergreen hits for blockbuster releases. Although he created numerous iconic songs, he once faced difficulties working with lyricist Gulzar, a fellow Indian music icon. According to reports, RD Burman faced difficulties composing music for the song Mera Kuch Samaan, which was written by Gulzar and featured in his directorial, Ijaazat. The two often ended up quarrelling over lyrics, an example being the song mentioned earlier. Going by the reports, RD Burman found it difficult to come up with a tune for the song. When Asha Bhosle sang another tune, he liked it. It was then included in the song. The song went on to win two National Awards. Gulzar received the award for Best lyrics, while Asha Bhosle was given the award for Best Female Playback Singer.

In an old interview, RD Burman talked about working with Gulzar and the effort it took to compose a song for him. He stated, “It is very difficult to work with a man, his name is Gulzar. We were working on Aandhi. I couldn’t understand the language or metre of the songs he wrote in the film.” According to the late composer, the lyricist’s “metre” is very different from what he is used to in cinema. In the video, he was heard saying, “We can’t work like this.” Gulzar then asked him to try something, assuring him to do it in a different way.

Ijaazat is dubbed as a musical-romance, helmed by Gulzar. The cast includes Rekha, Naseeruddin Shah, Anuradha Patel, Shammi Kapoor among others. It is produced by R K Gupta, while the cinematography is done by Ashok Mehta and the editor Subhash Sehgal. RD Burman composed the music in the film. The film was released on September 11, 1987 and is inspired from the Bengali film Jatugriha, which was released in 1964.
