Many Bollywood singers started out their careers with Indian Idol, not always winning the title. Some of them are now top-notch singers of the country. Similarly, one such artist is an exceptional singer, but always wanted to be an actress. She kickstarted her career as a child actress and was among the top 10 in Indian Idol. Can you guess who she is? We are talking about Monali Thakur. She is one of the exceptional singers in the industry, who has crooned beautiful melodies like Sawaar Loon, Cham Cham and Moh Moh Ke Dhaage. She started her singing career in 1999 with the Bengali film Chena Chena, under the musical direction of Anupam Dutta. The song was Choi Choi Choi Tipi Tipi. The same year, she recorded the title track of a Bengali serial, Shri Ramakrishna. She gained popularity after her stint in the Indian Idol 2, where she secured 9th position. Despite that, she struggled to find a strong foothold in the music industry.

In 2008, Pritam Chakraborty offered her two songs for the Bollywood film Race, headlined by Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Katrina Kaif and Bipasha Basu. The songs are Khwab Dekhe (Sexy Lady) and Zara Zara Touch Me. These songs earned her recognition and she shot to stardom. Zara Zara Touch Me emerged to be the biggest chartbuster of that year. She always wanted to try acting, and this dream also came true.

As a child, Monali Thakur acted in a Bengali TV show, Aalokito Ek Indu, where she essayed the role of Indubala. In 2014, Monali Thakur marked her debut in acting with the film Lakshmi, helmed by Nagesh Kukunoor. The film showcased the harsh realities of human trafficking and child prostitution, which is a common phenomenon in India’s rural areas. While the film failed to impress the audience and received mixed reviews, the singer’s performance left an impression in the minds and hearts of the audience and she was praised for it as well. It earned her Best Actress Award at the South-Asian International Film Festival in Washington DC, making her the first Bollywood singer to have won. She was later seen in cameo roles in PK and Secret Superstar. She recently made her comeback as an actress in the film Dukaan, which was again a flop at the box office.

Monali Thakur has belted our songs like Raghupati Raghav from Krrish 3, Meow from Golmaal Returns, Anjaana Anjaani Ki Kahani from the film Anjaana Anjaani, Aga Bai from Aiyyaa, Tune Maari Entriyaan (Bangla Version). She was last seen on Super Singer Season 4 as a judge.
