Despite critical acclaim and positive word of mouth, the first part of the NTR biopic adaptation titled Kathanayakudu failed to make enough money at the box office. The theatrical rights of the Krish directorial, which was released on January 9, 2019, as a Sankranthi special, were sold at a whopping price of Rs 70 crore. Surprisingly, the film could not recover even 50% of the investment, leaving all the distributors to incur heavy losses. Nandamuri Balakrishna was quite disappointed with the result and immediately took a sensational decision.
Knowing the losses incurred, Nandamuri Balakrishna decided to compensate the buyers by giving away the theatrical rights of the sequel NTR Mahanayakudu for free. The distributors are expected to return their investments lost on the first part to him. Considering the situation, this is a welcome move by the Nandamuri scion, which hopefully inspires other filmmakers in Tollywood.
While the first part focused on the inspirational journey of NTR, how he struggled hard to become a superstar and demigod of Telugu cinema, the sequel Mahanayakudu will showcase his achievements on the political stage like becoming the Chief Minister barely 9 months after the formation of the party and launching several path-breaking welfare schemes.
NTR: Mahanayakudu has turned out to be such a huge disaster at the box office that the total collections of the film are not even 50 per cent of the first-day collections of Kathanayakudu.
NTR: Kathanayakudu reportedly grossed Rs 38 crore at the worldwide box office. The film earned Rs 20 crore for its distributors who spent Rs 70 crore on the theatrical rights. The film made them a huge loss of Rs 50 crore and the makers compensated this loss by giving the rights to NTR: Mahanayakudu, which was supposed to recoup their investment.
NTR: Mahanayakudu turned out to be a huge embarrassment for its makers after it failed to recoup the revenue in many places and grossed only Rs 1.25 crore at the worldwide box office on the first day of its release. The film was roundly rejected by the audience and became the biggest flop of Balayya’s career, breaking the record set by Ram Gopal Varma’s Office, the biggest disaster of the decade.
NTR: Mahanayakudu has reportedly grossed around Rs 7 crore at the worldwide box office. This is not even half of the collection of NTR: Kathanayakudu, which grossed Rs 17 crore on its first day in the global market. This comes as a big shock to the people in the film industry who had predicted that the film would be a box office hit.
