Mari Selvaraj, who directed the films Pariyerum Perumal, Maamannan, and Karnan, recently directed and produced the film Vaazhai. The film was released in the theatres on August 23. It received an overwhelming response from the fans and audience and has been getting non-stop praise from several film celebrities since its release.
Celebrities including director Mani Ratnam, Bala, and Mysskin have praised the film. In this situation, the Sahitya Akademi Award-winning writer Cho Dharman has said that all the things that appear in the film Vaazhai were recorded in his short story 10 years ago. He also said that Mari Selvaraj did not take any permission from him.
In an exclusive interview with News 18 Tamil Nadu TV, he mentioned that both of them are dealing with the same issue in different media. He said that he was the first to record the toil and pain of children carrying bananas and asked the directors to come forward to film the writers’ stories.
Dharman, in a social media post, said he has been receiving several phone calls from friends regarding the film as the story looked similar to one of the former’s short stories. He then watched the film and clarified that he wrote the story of Vazhaiyadi inspired by the lives of people in Ponnankurichi, near Thiruvaikundam, where his brother and maternal uncle were born.

Director Mari Selvaraj earlier posted on X, “I have just read a short story called Vazaiyadi by author Cho Tharman about the labourers lifting the load of bananas. Good story…everyone should read it. thanks to writer Cho Dharman.” He also shared the link to the short story.
In the climax of the film Vaazhai, Mari mentioned that 20 people were killed when a lorry carrying bananas overturned, and the film was dedicated to them. He also said that he was a witness to this incident.
Released on August 23, Vaazhai is backed by Disney+ Hotstar, Navvi Studios and Farmer’s Master Plan Production. It stars Ponvel M, Raghul R, Kalaiyarasan, Nikhila Vimal, J Sathish Kumar, Dhivya Duraisamy, Janaki, and others. The film is co-produced by Mari Selvaraj and Divya Mari Selvaraj.
