The theme for International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2023 is “Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting Dignity In Practice For All.” The objective behind this year’s theme is based on first-hand accounts that demonstrate how people, who are stuck in severe poverty, frequently put in long, hard hours in hazardous, unregulated jobs yet are still unable to make enough money to sustain their families and themselves.
This year’s theme underscores the importance of upholding the human dignity of all individuals. Decent work should empower people, provide equitable compensation, ensure safe working conditions, and fundamentally recognise the value and humanity of every worker. It also calls for universal access to social protection and decent work.
History And Significance
In 1987, the Human Rights and Liberties Plaza at the Trocadéro in Paris, France, hosted the inaugural commemoration of the event in memory of those who had died from hunger, violence, poverty, and terror. The International Movement ATD Fourth World founder Joseph Wresinski unveiled the memorial stone. Later, October 17 was formally declared as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty by the United Nations (UN) in 1992.
The day aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by families or individuals living in poverty and to strive for the global eradication of poverty. People in poverty often lack fundamental necessities and endure perilous living and working conditions, experience unequal access to the legal system, and have limited access to healthcare.
