No plot details have been disclosed for the project, as everything is being kept tightly under wraps. The only information available is that it will be an original story written by Iñárritu.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are reportedly in talks for a groundbreaking new film project helmed by acclaimed director Alejandro González Iñárritu, with Hollywood megastar Tom Cruise set to star, according to an exclusive report by Deadline. This collaboration marks Iñárritu’s return to English-language cinema since his critically acclaimed work on The Revenant.

The untitled film is said to be produced and directed by Iñárritu, featuring a script co-written in 2023 with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, his collaborators from the award-winning film Birdman, reuniting after a decade. Cruise, in addition to his starring role, will also serve as a producer, marking his first project following the recent announcement of his strategic partnership with Warner Bros. It is expected that Legendary Entertainment will also be involved in the production.

Details of the project are being kept tightly under wraps, with no plot specifics revealed other than it is an original story penned by Iñárritu. However, the news outlet reported that sources indicate that Iñárritu has been in discussions with a select group of actors in recent weeks, with Tom Cruise being one of the first to meet with the director. Tom Cruise, known for his discerning choice of roles, was reportedly eager to join the project after learning about Iñárritu’s plans for his next major studio film.

This collaboration aligns with Cruise’s recent deal with Warner Bros., signalling his desire to work on original, high-impact projects with renowned directors. The film also reflects the vision outlined by Cruise, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, and Warner Bros. studio chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, aiming to create cinematic experiences that resonate globally and are best enjoyed on the big screen.

For Iñárritu, this project marks his return to major studio filmmaking since The Revenant, which not only achieved commercial success but also earned him his second consecutive Best Director Oscar. Following a brief hiatus, during which he focused on his passion project Bardo for Netflix, Iñárritu is now poised to deliver another cinematic gem.

While Cruise has primarily focused on blockbuster franchises in recent years, he has a history of collaborating with visionary directors, including Stanley Kubrick and Paul Thomas Anderson. With three acting nominations and one for producing under his belt, Cruise’s involvement in an Iñárritu film is sure to capture the attention of Academy voters once the project hits theatres.

Tom Cruise is represented by CAA and Greenberg Glusker, while Iñárritu is represented by CAA and Gang Tyre.
