Congress Reviews Poll Defeats in MP, Chhattisgarh, Says ‘Results Unexpected & Disappointing’
The meeting was chaired by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi

Days after facing defeat in the recently concluded Assembly polls, the Congress party on Friday conducted separate review meetings over its dismal performance in Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh, and said that its defeat in the two states at the hands of the BJP was unexpected.

The meeting was chaired by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi. Former party chief Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders were also present in the meeting.

Congress’ Way Forward

Highlighting the points of the meeting, Congress General Secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal informed that the state Congress chiefs have been instructed to submit a booth-wise report on the party’s performance.  “We will strengthen our connect with the people and unitedly fight the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to unseat the BJP government,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

AICC general secretary in-charge for Chhattisgarh Kumari Selja said they are dejected but not demoralised and would together contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and win. Further mentioning that the party will carry out a detailed analysis on the poll results in the states, she added that party has not lost its vote share.

“We are disappointed, but not in despair. In the coming times, we will fight the Lok Sabha elections together,” she said.

MP in-charge of Congress, Randeep Surjewala, informed that the reasons for the party’s defeat in Madhya Pradesh were also discussed in a cordial atmosphere with the party leaders. He noted that the results are disappointing and are not as per the party’s expectations.

State Chief to Submit Report over Poll Defeat

During the meeting, the party has also sought a detailed report from state unit chiefs on its poor performance in the recent round of Assembly elections. Notably, the Congress lost its power to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. The party also failed to oust the saffron camp from Madhya Pradesh as well.

The party is also scheduled to hold a meeting on Saturday to review its losses in Rajasthan.
