Ravichandran Ashwin finally managed to get an entry into India’s ODI World Cup squad as he has replaced injured Axar Patel from the final 15 for the mega event starting October 5. Ashwin shone in the ODI series against Australia where he claimed three wickets in the second ODI and made a case for himself for the ODI World Cup. India, who didn’t pick any right-arm spinner in the preliminary squad, decided to replace the injured Axar with Ashwin who has played in the 2011 and 2015 World Cups.
“Axar Patel has failed to recover in time for the World Cup after sustaining a left quadriceps strain during India’s Asia Cup Super Four encounter against Bangladesh. The spin-bowling all-rounder missed the final of the Asia Cup as a result,” ICC stated in a media release.
“Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been named his replacement, who was impressive on his return to ODI cricket in the recently concluded series against Australia where he picked up four wickets in two games,” the release further stated.
A few minutes before the announcement, veteran wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik predicted Ashwin to get a place in the WC squad.

Ravichandran Ashwin – The Magician,I don’t know about playing him in the Elevens but this guy can definitely create an impact with whatever he does.@ashwinravi99@RJ_Balaji— Arun Kumar (@ArunKum97196451) September 28, 2023
I always believed that either Ravichandran Ashwin or Sundar should have been there in the squad initially since they provide the variety of the off spin! Finally Ash is there! He gives you more with the ball but he is very handy at No. 8 as well!#Ashwin #CWC23#BCCI #AxarPatel https://t.co/4aXtJe9I07

Previously, Axar was part of the 2015 squad and is now all set to miss out on his second ODI World Cup after sustaining a left quadriceps strain during India’s Asia Cup Super Four encounter against Bangladesh, subsequently missing the final of the continental event.
Ashwin travelled with the Indian team to Guwahati where they will play the first warm-up game against England on Saturday, September 30.
