The family of three-time Rajya Sabha member Dhiraj Prasad Sahu has also been a favourite of the Congress, as his brothers got Lok Sabha tickets three times. Sahu and one of his brothers have both served as treasurers of the Congress in Jharkhand, BJP leaders say.
With over Rs 350 crore seized so far from the premises of Sahu’s family, union home minister Amit Shah questioned in Parliament on Monday why the Congress has not even suspended the lawmaker so far. “We have sought an explanation from him,” said Congress’s Jharkhand incharge Avinash Pandey. According to BJP leaders, what explains the “soft stand” of the Congress towards Sahu is the party’s deep connection with his family. “Lok Sabha tickets were given virtually on demand to the Sahu brothers,” a top BJP leader told News18.
Sample this: Dhiraj Prasad Sahu got a Lok Sabha ticket twice in 2009 and 2014 from the Congress but could not win; he was made a Rajya Sabha member thrice. His late brother Shiv Prasad Sahu was twice a Lok Sabha member of the Congress. Dhiraj’s second brother Gopal Sahu was given a ticket by the Congress in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to contest against BJP’s Jayant Sinha. Gopal lost. He also served as the party’s treasurer while Dhiraj’s Rajya Sabha profile says that he has also been the party’s state treasurer.
BJP president JP Nadda led a protest at the Gandhi statue in Parliament on Monday where three party MPs told News18 that Sahu must be expelled by the Congress and from the Rajya Sabha.
“The Congress is a corrupt party and the people know it. But I was surprised to hear the explanation from the Congress that this was a personal affair and had nothing to do with the party. How is that possible? If a legal business is done, money comes into bank accounts. Money does not come in cash like this. The Congress is not expelling Sahu because it is hand-in-glove with him. It is clear that Sahu was an ATM for the top Congress leadership,” BJP’s Rajya Sabha lawmaker Prakash Javadekar told News18.
BJP MP from Gorakhpur and actor Ravi Kishan said Sahu should be immediately expelled from the Rajya Sabha. “There are no ifs and buts in this. He should be immediately expelled from the Rajya Sabha…all this is public money and he has done corruption. He has not paid taxes and collected black money. I also earn in cinema but I pay tax for this,” Kishan told News18.
BJP MP Rita Bahaguna Joshi said that it was a matter of shame that so much money had been found from a three-time Rajya Sabha member. “Is this money of the Congress party? Rahul Gandhi needs to answer. His membership must go as he gave a false affidavit about his assets to the Rajya Sabha,” Joshi told News18.
Joshi said this corruption is not of one day and the CBI and ED must start a probe too. “An inquiry will reveal everything,” she said.
