Gujarat Giants Release Over Half Their Squad Ahead of WPL Mini Auction
Gujarat Giants have the maximum purse among the five franchises for the Women's Premier League auction.

Gujarat Giants have released over half their squad after finishing at the bottom of the points table in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) that was held earlier this year. The window to retain and release players for the upcoming season ended on October 15.

A total of 60 players have been retained by the five franchises while 29 have been released. Of these 29, Gujarat Giants alone have released 11 players including four overseas.

Released players: Annabel Sutherland, Ashwani Kumari, Georgia Wareham, Hurley Gala, Kim Garth, Mansi Joshi, Monica Patel, Parunika Sisodia, Sabbineni Meghana, Sophia Dunkley, Sushma Verma

Retained Players: Ashleigh Gardner, Beth Mooney, Dayalan Hemalatha, Harleen Deol, Laura Wolvaardt, Shabnam Shakil, Sneh Rana, Tanuja Kanwar

Gujarat Giants endured a poor first season as they lost six of their eight matches while winning just two – against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals.

Their captain Beth Mooney was ruled out of the entire season after suffering a calf strain in her team’s first match of the season. Gujarat Giants, brought in South African Laura Wolvaardt as he replacement who alongside Mooney has also been retained.

Gujarat Giants have as many as 10 vacant slots now and have purse of Rs 5.95 crore – the maximum among the five teams.

Mumbai Indians, who won the inaugural season, have released just four players including Heather Graham, Dhara Gujjar, Neelam Bisht and Sonam Yadav.

Delhi Capitals, who finished runners-up, have released three players including Aparna Mondal, Jasia Akhtar and Tara Norris.

UP Warriorz have released four players including Devika Vaidya, Shabnim Ismail*, Shivali Shinde and Simran Shaikh. On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bangalore, who were fourth, have released seven players including Dane van Niekerk, Erin Burns, Komal Zanzad, Megan Schutt*, Poonam Khemnar, Preeti Bose and Sahana Pawar.
