'I Don't See Him Making Last 15': Former Australia Captain on R Ashwin's Chances to Play in ODI World Cup
Aaron Finch feels that Indian might include Ashwin as a mentor around the group for his vast experience but making it to the 15-member squad is going to be difficult for him.

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch made a big statement on Ravichandran Ashwin’s chances to get a place in India’s ODI World Cup squad. The World Cup-bound teams have to submit their final squad for the mega ICC event on Friday. The recent quadriceps injury to Axar Patel has opened doors for Ashwin to make a sensational last-minute entry to India’s World Cup squad. Axar sustained the injury during Asia Cup and missed the tournament’s final followed by the first two ODI against Australia. However, the BCCI is still assessing his medical situation as there are chances of him getting fit for the World Cup. In case, he fails to pass the fitness test, the BCCI might look to get Ashwin in the WC squad as his replacement.

Finch suggested that it won’t be easy for Ashwin to make it to the World Cup squad but his presence in the current squad for the Australia series will surely help other players.

“I think he (Ashwin) might struggle to make it to the final 15, but as somebody who has played so much cricket, I think the rest of the group that is with the Indian team for this current series against Australia, they could learn so much about big game play,” Finch said on Star Sports.”

The 2021 T20 World Cup-winning skipper feels that Indian might include Ashwin as a mentor around the group for his vast experience but making it to the 15-member squad is going to be difficult for him.

“Because Ashwin is somebody that stands up in big games, whether it’s a test match or a T20 game, he has done it all throughout his career. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s there at the moment as a mentor around the group, but I don’t see him making that last 15, unfortunately,” he added.

The former Australia captain further picked the pacers to look out for in ODI World Cup, He picked India’s Mohammed Siraj apart from three other premier pacers.

“I think Trent Bolt, Mitchell Starc, and (Kagiso) Rabada, these guys, especially (Mohammed) Siraj, he’s as good as anyone in the world at the moment,” he said.
