India will look to add more medals to their tally on Day 3 of the Asian Games. The Indian contingent has already bagged 11 medals including two gold. They will take part in several events on Tuesday including fencing, men’s hockey, shooting, swimming, tennis, judo, cycling, squash and boxing.
India has disappointed so far at fencing in the 2023 Asian Games. Only Tanishka Khatri made it to the quarterfinals of the women’s individual epee, eventually losing to Kong Man Wai Vivian. In men’s hockey however, India had a flying start to the tournament that saw them take down Uzbekistan in a 16-0 affair. They will be facing Singapore next in the tournament.
India secured its first gold at the Asian Games in shooting. After a 25m rapid-fire pistol team triumph, India will be looking to secure another victory at the air rifle mixed team event.
Meanwhile, the women’s cricket team also clinched a gold medal in the T20 event.
The Indian contingent also had a decent showing at swimming with 6th and 7th finishes in the 100-metre backstroke and 4×100-metre freestyle relay.
India are proving to be strong contenders in tennis at the 19th Asian Games with Round of 32 victories in men’s singles and women’s singles. In Judo, Garima Choudhary lost to Ryoko Salinas in the round of 16 of the women’s 70 kg event. They still have three contenders left to keep their podium-finish hopes alive. The cycling events will be starting on Tuesday as India is set to field a 14-member contingent across different competitions.
In Boxing, World Championship bronze medallist Nishant Dev entered the Round of 16 with a 5-0 win over Nepal’s Dipesh Lama in the men’s 71kg weight class while Deepak too progressed in the Men’s 51kg, entering the Round of 16 with a 5-0 win over Malaysia’s Muhammad Abdul Qaiyum.
