Prime Minister Narendra Modi met five gang-rape survivors from Shandeshkhali, shortly after addressing a women’s rally at Barasat in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas on Wednesday afternoon. He assured them support on behalf of his party (BJP) in their fight for justice against the atrocities meted out to them by jailed and suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides.
PM Modi, who spotlighted the Sandeshkhali issue at the Barasat rally earlier in the day, listened to the ordeal of the women survivors carefully and patiently like a father figure, said BJP sources, adding that the women were emotional to see that the Prime Minister understood their pain.
While addressing the women’s rally at Kachari Maidan in Barasat, PM Modi launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government and accused it of shielding the accused in the Sandeshkhali case and creating roadblocks for the Centre in implementing schemes.
Calling the women of Sandeshkhali, his parivar (family), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said whatever transpired in Sandeshkhali had brought shame to the nation, but the TMC government in the state was busy using its power to protect criminals, who tortured women.
