Reece Topley Ruled Out of ODI World Cup 2023 With Fractured Finger, ECB to Name Replacement Soon
Reece Topley has been ruled out of the remainder of ICC ODI World Cup 2023 confirmed ECB, while a replacement will soon be announced.

England and Wales Cricket Board have confirmed that Reece Topley has been ruled out for the remainder of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India. Topley sustained a fracture in his left index finger revealed the statement from ECB, who have not yet named a replacement.

Topley would be decimated with the latest injury, which is the latest of the major setbacks he has suffered in his career. Earlier, the star pacer had also suffered an injury while representing Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2023, after which he underwent surgery and returned in the nick of time to represent England at the World Cup.

The 29-year-old from Ipswich picked up 8 wickets and was England’s leading wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup so far, as Jos Buttler’s men have won just one game so far in four outings.

“England and Surrey seamer Reece Topley has been ruled out of the rest of the ICC Men’s World Cup after fracturing his left index finger during England’s defeat to South Africa on Saturday,” read the statement from ECB.

“Scans in Mumbai on Saturday, after the match at the Wankhede Stadium, revealed the full extent of the injury. Topley will return to the UK in the next 24 hours,” the statement informed further.

ECB further wrote that the pacer’s recovery will be monitored and a replacement for Topley will be announced soon.

Earlier on Saturday, England coach Matthew Mott had confirmed that Jofra Archer will not be named as Reece’s replacement.

“Jofra Archer is not going to be considered for selection,” said Mott. Brydon Carse is reportedly the front-runner to replace the injured Topley.

Left-arm seamer Topley, who has taken eight wickets in three games at the World Cup, was struck on the index finger of his bowling hand when attempting to block a drive in his follow-through in Saturday’s 229-run thrashing by the Proteas in Mumbai.

Defending champions England have only won one of their four games at the World Cup and face an uphill struggle to reach the semi-finals.

Buttler and Co. slipped to ninth place in the World Cup standings following their massive defeat to South Africa.
