Sikkim Floods:

The death toll resulting from the flash floods in Sikkim has risen to 27. Additionally, 143 individuals remain missing. On October 6, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in the flash floods. He also declared emergency assistance of Rs 2,000 per person for those seeking refuge in shelters. The flash floods, triggered by a cloudburst on October 4, have inflicted harm on over 25,000 people, resulted in the destruction of over 1,200 homes, and washed away 13 bridges, placing the Himalayan state in a dire situation.

India at Asian Games:

India’s outstanding performance at the Asian Games in China resulted in a total of 100 medals, including 25 gold, 35 silver, and 40 bronze. The most recent medals were secured in the men’s final of Archery Compound and the women’s final in kabaddi. India currently holds the fourth position in the medal standings. India’s hundredth medal was clinched by the women’s Kabaddi team, who secured the Gold in the final against Chinese Taipei.

Maharashtra Hospital Deaths:

The Maharashtra government informed the Bombay High Court that state-run hospitals in Nanded and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, which had witnessed an increase in patient mortality recently, were experiencing an influx of critically ill patients from private healthcare facilities. However, the court emphasised that the state cannot absolve itself of responsibility. The state administration also informed a division bench consisting of Chief Justice D K Upadhya and Justice Arif Doctor that there doesn’t appear to be any gross negligence on the part of the state-run hospitals. Officials reported that between September 30 and October 3, 31 patients, including many infants, died at the Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded, while 18 patients died between October 2 and 3 at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

Varanasi Court Grants 4 More Weeks to ASI in Gyanvapi Case

On October 5, a Varanasi court gave the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) four additional weeks to conduct its scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex and submit its report. The court also said that the survey’s timeframe would not be extended above this point. During a hearing on a complaint by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), District Judge A K Vishvesh reportedly agreed to the government’s request to prolong the duration of the existing study by an additional four weeks, according to government attorney Rajesh Mishra. The ASI now has until November 6 to complete and submit the survey report that was due on October 6.

IAF to Procure Additional Batch of 97 Tejas Mark-1A Jets:

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is nearing completion of a Rs 1.15 lakh crore contract to purchase an extra batch of 97 Tejas Mark-1A aircraft, as well as upgrade 84 Sukhoi-30MKI planes at a cost of Rs 60,000 crore, according to Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari on October 3. The defence ministry signed a Rs 48,000-crore agreement with state-run aerospace company Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd in February 2021 for the acquisition of 83 Tejas MK-1A planes for IAF. The IAF’s overall number of indigenously produced aircraft will rise to 180 with the inclusion of 97 Tejas Mark-1A fighters.
