Thiruvananthapuram: The appointment of former Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam as Kerala Governor has stirred a controversy as 117 members of Kerala High Court Advocates Association moved a resolution requesting President Pranab Mukherjee to discard the Central government's recommendation.

Kerela High Court Advocate Association Secretary MR Nandkumar said, "P Sathasivam was the CJI. It will impact the independence of judiciary."

The remarks after sources said that the Home Ministry has forwarded the file recommending Sathasivam's name to the President for approval.

The government was going ahead with Sathasivam's appointment despite objections.

The Congress has criticised the move alleging that it was a thank you present from BJP President Amit Shah. Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that he was never consulted.

Voicing his objection, former Chief Justice of India VN Khare has said that such a move will lead to more political intervention in judiciary in the coming years.

"There is no precedent to this. No Chief Justice of India has ever been offered or accepted this post. This is an individual viewpoint. He must have thought it appropriate. CJI is fourth in the hierarchy," Khare said.
