After AAP's Tomar, Maharashtra minister Lonikar in educational qualification row
The Congress party has demanded the resignation of Maharashtra Water Supplies Minister Babanrao Lonikar, alleging discrepancies in his educational qualification.

Amid the controversy in Delhi over alleged fake degree of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Jitender Singh Tomar, a similar case has come up in Maharashtra. The state unit of the Congress party has demanded the resignation of Maharashtra Water Supplies Minister Babanrao Lonikar, alleging discrepancies in his educational qualification.

According to the Congress, affidavits submitted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in 2004 and 2009 show that Lonikar pursued the first year of his BA degree from the Yashavantrao Chavan Open University.

However, the affidavit filed by the BJP leader in 2014 Assembly elections show his qualification as just fifth standard pass.

Dismissing the allegations by the Congress party, the Maharashtra minister said that he had earlier mentioned first year BA as he had tried to complete his education by getting enrolled in a degree programme, but failed to complete it due to a busy political schedule. According to Lonikar, this was the reason for him to mention standard 5th in his affidavit in 2014.
