Assembly polls: Key candidates in Jharkhand

New Delhi: In 14 years of its existence Jharkhand has never had a single-party government. Coalitions government ruling the state since 2000 have seen Jharkhand grappling with political instability, high corruption, slow development and Naxalism along with a host of other issues.

But in 2014 unprecedented polling broke all previous records with an overall voting figure of 66.03 per cent in the Assembly elections. It is a close fight between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress with a few regional parties too having their spheres of influence.

Here is a list of important candidates who are eagerly awaiting the results:

Hemant Soren: Jharkhand Chief Minister and JMM party chief Hemant Soren is seeking to retain power in the face of challenge by BJP. He is contesting from two seats Dumka and Barhait.

Shashank Sekhar Bhokta: Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Shashank Sekhar Bhokta from JMM represents the Sarath constituency in the state of Jharkhand. He is seeking re-election from Sarath, the constituency which recorded 75 per cent polling in fifth phase of Assembly elections.

Joba Manjhi: Former minister Joba Manjhi from JMM is contesting from Manoharpur. In September, Manjhi resigned from JVM to join JMM.

Champai Soren: JMM leader and State Tribal Welfare Minister is contesting from Saraikela.

Nalin Soren: JMM candidate Nalin Soren from Sikaripara was earlier in news for his involvement in a seed scam.

Saryu Rai: Senior BJP leader Saryu Rai is contesting from Jamshedpur West. 15 candidates are in the fray for Jamshedpur West constituency.

Arjun Munda: Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and former chief minister Arjun Munda is contesting for the fifth time from the Kharsawan seat as a BJP candidate.

CP Singh: Chandreshwar Prasad Singh, a prominent leader of BJP, is contesting from Ranchi. Ranchi has been a BJP citadel since 1996.

Raghuvar Das: Former Deputy Chief Minister and BJP National Vice President Raghuvar Das is contesting from Jamshedpur East. This is the third Assembly election after the state was carved out of Bihar on November 15, 2000.

Dullu Mahato: BJP leader Dullu Mahato is contesting from Baghmara constituency.

Simon Marandi: Veteran JMM leader Simon Marandi joined BJP before the Assembly elections in the state. He is contesting from Littipara.

Hemlal Murmu: BJP's Hemlal Murmu was a minister from JMM quota, but later rebelled and joined BJP. He is now contesting from Barhait.

Sukhdeo Bhagat: Congress state president Sukhdeo Bhagat from Lohardaga has a clean image in Jharkhand and can give a tough competition to any leader. Bhagat and AJSU's state president Kamal Kishor Bhagat are face to face in Lohardaga.

Geeta Shree Oraon: Congress MLA Geeta Shree Oraon is contesting from Sisai and she comes under super rich candidates of Jharkhand. Sisai is a Naxal-hit area in the state.

Sudesh Mahto: AJSU party president and former Jharkhand deputy chief minister Sudesh Mahto is contesting from Ranchi. He was in the first government led by Babulal Marandi and then he had been in three governments led by BJP leader Arjun Munda.
