New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday night expelled its Uttar Pradesh unit vice president Dayashankar Singh from the party for his derogatory remarks against BSP chief Mayawati.
BJP state President Keshav Prasad Maurya sacked him from the party, hours after he announced that Singh had been relieved from all organisational responsibilities.
Expulsion from the party will remain in force for six years in line with the party's rules, BJP sources said.
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley joined political leaders across party lines in Parliament in condemning the statement.
"I am personally hurt that a BJP party person used such derogatory words against Mayawati. I should tell Mayawati ji that the BJP shares her grief over this issue. I will look into this matter. We stand with her," Jaitley said in the Rajya Sabha.
Earlier, Singh marked a new low in politics with his derogatory remark comparing the former chief minister to a "prostitute".
"Even a prostitute, when she enters into a contract with a man, sticks to the contract. But former UP CM Mayawati does not follow any binding when selling tickets. If she has sold it for Rs 1 crore and she gets another contender who is ready to pay Rs 2 crore, she would give it away to him," he said.
BSP has filed a police complaint in Lucknow, seeking lodging of an FIR against Singh under the SC/ST Act for his derogatory remarks.
