BJP Firebrand Leader Uma Bharti Won't Contest Elections, Cites Age and Health Factor
The MP from Jhansi said she was a two-time Member of Parliament and since she had done a lot of party work, her health had been affected. The BJP leader elaborated by saying she had been facing problems with her knees and back.

Lucknow: Firebrand BJP leader, Union Minister Uma Bharti has said that she would not be contesting elections anymore citing age and health issues. Working in the interest of the party will continue though.

The MP from Jhansi said she was a two-time Member of Parliament and since she had done a lot of party work, her health had been affected. The BJP leader elaborated by saying she had been facing problems with her knees and back.

Speaking to media in Jhansi, Uma Bharti said, “I have been a two-time Parliamentarian and have worked a lot for the party over year due to which I have developed problems in my knees. Now I will not contest any more elections but will continue to work for the party.”

The current Cabinet Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation contested her first election in 1984 but was unsuccessful. Post this, she contested from Khajuraho seat in 1989 and successfully retained the seat till 1999 before finally switching her constituency to Bhopal.

During her political career, Uma Bharti had held various state-level and cabinet-level portfolios in the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Tourism, Youth Affairs and Sports, and also in Coal and Mines during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. After Narendra Modi became PM in 2014, she was appointed the Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, and held this office until September 2017.
