Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief JP Nadda’s tenure as party president has been officially extended till June this year. The decision was approved by the party’s national council on Sunday.
In the BJP National Council meeting, which is being held in New Delhi, Nadda was also granted the authority to make significant party decisions independently, subject to later approval by the party’s parliamentary board.
The development, which was announced in January by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, underlines the party’s preference for continuity as it gears up for the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha Elections in a few months.
Last year, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, a former party president like him, moved the proposal of extending Nadda’s tenure till June and the executive unanimously endorsed it. The BJP’s parliamentary board had already approved the extension of Nadda’s term.
“I, on behalf of the party, express heartfelt gratitude to Nadda-ji for his committed leadership and contributions, and extend the best wishes for his future term,” Shah said at the time.
Nadda has held several significant positions in the party since he joined the BJP. In June 2019, Nadda was elected the National Working President of the Bharatiya Janata Party and in January 2020, the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In 1991, he was made the President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. In 2010, he was made the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Nadda was also nominated as the BJP candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat. On Thursday, after filing his nomination, Nadda expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha.
