New Delhi: As the results of the assembly elections in Karnataka came out, the state on Sunday saw the elephant stumble, the bicycle punctured and the arrow missing its mark.
Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (whose party symbol is the elephant) came a cropper as did Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party, which has the bicycle as its symbol.
In fact, state SP chief and former Chief Minister S Bangarappa, who was pitted against BJP's chief ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa, was humbled at the hustings.
It was a similar story for the Janata Dal (United) headed by Sharad Yadav, which broke ranks with the BJP-led NDA in the state and contested as many as 25 seats.
Besides the three parties scoring a duck, a similar fate was in store for the regional outfit Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha.
UP Chief Minister and BSP supremo Mayawati had campaigned strenuously in the southern state to make inroads as it has a sizeable number of dalit population.
