ND Tiwari resigned citing health grounds in the wake of an alleged sex scandal.

New Delhi: Chhattisgarh Governor ESL Narasimhan was on Sunday given additional charge of Andhra Pradesh following the resignation of ND Tiwari, the Rashtrapati Bhawan announced.

Tiwari, 86, resigned on Saturday citing health grounds in the wake of an alleged sex scandal.

President Pratibha Patil has asked Narasimhan to look after Andhra Pradesh until a new governor is named, a Rashtrapati Bhawan statement said.

"The President has accepted the resignation of Tiwari and has appointed Narasimhan to discharge the functions of the governor of Andhra Pradesh in addition to his own duties until regular arrangements for the office of the governor of Andhra Pradesh are made," said the statement.

ABN channel, owned by Telugu daily Andhra Jyothi, on Friday showed explicit clippings purported to be of Tiwari involved in a sex romp. It claimed that the pictures were taken in the Raj Bhawan.

Sources said Tiwari resigned after the Central Government asked him to quit on receipt of a report from state government over the alleged sex scandal.

Earlier, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi discussed the developments with senior Congress leaders Pranab Mukherjee and AK Antony in New Delhi.

The channel quoted Radhika, a woman from Uttarakhand, as saying that she sent young women to the Raj Bhawan on Tiwari's request through his aide.

She claimed that she was "exposing" the Governor as he failed to keep his word to provide her a mining licence in Andhra Pradesh.
