Cong delegation meets CEC on Khurshid notice
Khurshid was served a show-cause notice by the EC for his remarks promising reservation for backward minorities during his poll campaign.

New Delhi: A delegation of senior Congress leaders on Monday met Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi and discussed with him the notice given to Law Minister Salman Khurshid on his sub-quota for minority reservation remarks during campaigning for his wife in Uttar Pradesh recently.

"We have briefly advised the EC on the issue of Salman Khurshid's notice received by him," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Shinghvi said after coming out of the meeting with CEC.

Singhvi, a lawyer himself, who went on behalf of Khurshid to take up the matter with EC, said it would hear again in the near future.

"A more detailed hearing in this regard will be held in the near future after a week or two weeks," he said.

Sources said the next hearing on the issue before the EC will be held on January 19.

Khurshid was served a show-cause notice by the Election Commission on January 10 for his remarks promising reservation for backward minorities during his election campaign in favour of his wife Louise, who is the Congress candidate in Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh.

The show-cause notice was served after the BJP complained against him for violating the model code of conduct by making such promises to woo minority voters.

Pleading not guilty of any violation of the model code, Khurshid in his reply had said that his remarks were based on the Congress manifesto released by the party during the 2009

Lok Sabha polls.

Today's meeting, which discussed other issues related to Uttar Pradesh elections, lasted over 90 minutes and was attended by Singhvi and Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh.
