Cong sweeps South Assam, BJP loses ground
BJP set to draw a blank in South Assam as Cong poaches on Barak Valley vote bank.

New Delhi: The South Assam vote bank of BJP has been severely eroded as counting of votes to decide the fate of five key constituencies seems to reveal.

In Silchar, Sushmita Dev of the Indian National Congress (INC) has opened up a lead of around 4000 votes over her nearest rival, Rajdeep Roy of BJP.

In Karimganj North, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha of INC leads Abdul Muqtadir Choudhury of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) by a margin of over 2000 votes. Purkayastha’s lead over BJP candidate Mission Ranjan Das is over 10,000.

In Karimganj South, Siddeque Ahmed of INC leads Sipra Goon of BJP, third in the fray, by almost 7000 votes. The Trinamool Congress has emerged as the second force in this contest.

In Badarpur, Jamal Uddin Ahmed of the Congress leads BJP candidate Biswarup Bhattacharjee by 4500 votes. In minority-dominated Hailakandi, Abdul Muhib Mazumder leads his nearest AIUDF rival by over 2000 votes. Incidentally, the BJP candidate here has till 1.43 pm secured only around 700 votes.

The Congress went to people on the twin planks of development and advanced peace talks with ULFA. BJP sang the same old tune of illegal migration and demographic alteration. People, in the end, voted for stability and peace.
