Chandigarh: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday said that the Congress' decision to field young candidates in Punjab for the Lok Sabha elections would backfire as they will not be accepted by the people.
"Where is the question of challenge? Who knows them (the young candidates) and moreover, some of them are outsiders and will not be accepted by people," Badal said.
The 47-year-old SAD President is of the view that "generation next" candidates of the Congress will prove a no match for the experienced and "known faces" put up by his party.
Out of the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab, four of the candidates fielded by the Congress are first-timers.
The candidates are Raninder Singh (41), son of former chief minister Amarinder Singh, former Punjab Youth Congress president Vijay Inder Singla (36), present youth body chief Ravneet Singh Bittu (33) and Sukhwinder Singh Danny (33).
"Have people even heard about these Danny-Shanny's (Sukhwinder Danny) before. Moreover, Danny belongs to Amritsar but he will fight from Faridkot while Bittu, who is from Ludhiana, has been given ticket from Anandpur Sahib," Badal said.
Meanwhile, reacting to Sukhbir's statement, Bittu said, "the Akalis don't believe in giving opportunities to the youth. The promises they make to the youth are only on paper."
"For the Akalis, even the people with white-flowing beards are youth," he said.
