New Delhi: The infighting within the CPM came out in the open when Kerala Chief Minister VS Achutanandan was removed from the Politburo on Sunday. However, he will stay on as Chief Minister of the state.
In a statement, the Central Committee decided in view of violation of the organisational discipline that Achutanandan should be removed from the Politburo.
The committee also reiterated that the party will fight the case politically and legally.
The CPM had called a two-day meeting of its central committee to end the bitter infighting in the party's Kerala unit between Achutanandan and state Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.
It is learnt that Achutanandan had skipped the party's meet in Delhi.
Achuthanandan has refused to follow the party’s diktat and wants Vijayan be removed as state secretary for he has been named an accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Rs 374- crore SNC Lavalin corruption case.
The Vijayan faction, in retaliation, has demanded that disciplinary action be taken against Achuthanandan for "violating party discipline".
A majority of the central committee members from Kerala have been demanding stringent action against the Chief Minister.
Achuthanandan has refused to accept the party’s line that the Lavalin case against Vijayan is “politically motivated”. At the last meeting of the Politburo, Achuthanandan had said that the Lavalin case was an instance of corruption
But the central leadership seems to be against supporting the Chief Minister’s stand.
