DA case: Jayalalithaa's hearing resumes today

New Delhi: A special Bangalore court will on Tuesday resume hearing the 66 crore disproportionate asset case filed against Tamil Nadu chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

The Tamil Nadu CM is unlikely to appear before the court.

Sources close to the CM say that she may move an application seeking postponement of the hearing, an option given to her by the Supreme Court.

The court on October 21 had adjourned the hearing to November 8, as recording of Jayalalithaa's statement on 1,000-odd questions framed in the case remained inconclusive during the two-day hearing.

The apex court had asked the trial court to complete her deposition in one or two sittings and adjourn the November 8 hearing to an another date.

The disproportionate assets case involves the alleged accumulation of assets worth over Rs 66 crore by Jayalalithaa between 1991 and 1996.

The case proceedings were shifted out of Tamil Nadu by the apex court on her plea fearing that she might be denied a fair trial in the state then ruled by her arch rival DMK chief Karunanidhi, whom she accused of implicating her in a false case.
