Chennai: In the wake of a newspaper report stating that Tamil Nadu chief ministers had not declared their assets since long, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday said she possesses assets worth over Rs 51 crore and has not purchased any new property since coming to power three months ago.
Jayalalithaa told the state assembly that she had mentioned the details of her assets in the affidavit filed by her during the April 13 elections and "therefore, there is no need to furnish any (fresh details)".
Her remarks came in response to the issue raised by CK Tamilarasan of the Republic Party of India in the wake of the newspaper report.
She said the particular daily had come out with the report "as if it is bringing out a big secret".
"The Election Commission has stipulated that details of property should be mentioned when one contests Lok Sabha or Assembly polls. I had attached details of my property along with the nomination papers when I submitted them to contest from Srirangam constituency. The details of my assets had been widely reported," she said.
