How our MPs, MLAs have shamed us in the past

New Delhi: Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on Thursday saw ugly scenes from the anti-Telanagana MPs as the Bill to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh and create Telangana was tabled in both the Houses. Congress MP Lagdapati Rajagopal used pepper spray while TDP MP Venugopal Reddy allegedly brandished a knife inside the Lok Sabha bringing embarrassment to Parliament. This is not the first time that the political leaders have brought shame to Parliament democracy, there have been incidents in the past too.

Here is how our leaders have shamed India in the past:

October 1997: Uttar Pradesh

Brawl in UP Assembly. MLAs throw punches, microphones at each other

December 1999: Lok Sabha

Members from socialist and regional parties raised slogans against the women's bill, while one MP snatched the document from the hands of then Law Minister Ram Jethmalani.

August 2005: Lok Sabha

Mamata Banerjee threw a sheaf of papers at the Speaker's chair, taking street-level protest into Parliament as the Speaker had disallowed her notice to raise the subject of illegal Bangladeshi migration.

February 2008: Odisha

Scuffle over Opposition's demand for a special debate on Naxal attacks.

November 2009: Maharashtra

MLA assaulted for taking oath in Hindi

November 2009: Rajya Sabha

BJP-SP scuffle as Liberhan report is tabled

October 2010: Karnataka

Scuffle between the Congress and BJP MLAs over Yeddyurappa government.

October 2010: Jammu and Kashmir

Marshals called in to evict unruly MLAs.

December, 2011: Odisha

MLAs throw chair at Speaker during Question Hour

December 2011: Rajya Sabha

RJD MP Rajniti Prasad tears Draft Lokpal Bill.

September, 2012: Jharkhand

MLA strips shirt against industrial displacement

September 2012: Rajya Sabha

MPs from SP and BSP scuffle during tabling of quota in promotions Bill.

December, 2012: Lok Sabha

A Samajwadi Party member snatched the copy of the quota in promotion Bill from Minister of State V Narayanasamy when he rose to move it in the Lok Sabha. Amid jostling and pushing, Congress president Sonia Gandhi tried to get the copy back from Yashvir Singh, but he flung it to his party members and then it was torn to pieces.

May 2013: Rajya Sabha

Two AGP members Birendra Kumar Baishya and Kumar Deepak Das tried to snatch a copy of a Bill from external affairs minister Salman Khurshid when he rose to introduce it in the Rajya Sabha.

February 2014, J&K

A People's Democratic Party (PDP) MLA was injured in scuffle with marshals during protests in the J&K Assembly over alleged indiscriminate distribution of newly-created administrative units.

February 10, 2014: Rajya Sabha

The Rajya Sabha witnessed unruly scenes with two members tearing official papers and throwing them at the Chairman's podium. Attempts were also made to snatch the Chair's microphone.

11 February 2014: Rajya Sabha

Two Anti-Telangana MPs tore papers in front of Speaker others encircled his chair shouting slogans, forcing him to adjourn the house on.
