Intervene in UP: Vajpayee tells Centre
Former Prime Minister joins slew of leaders who believe there is lawlessness in Uttar Pradesh.

New Delhi: Senior BJP leader and former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Saturday demanded that the Centre “intervene” to end lawlessness in Uttar Pradesh.

"There is nothing like law and order in the state and the Centre should intervene," he said. The BJP and other Opposition parities want the Centre to impose President’s rule in the state, saying that the serial rape and murder of children in Noida’s Nithari village shows that the rule of law has collapsed in the state.

Vajpayee refused to answer why no senior BJP leader has visited Nithari like Congress chief Sonia Gandhi did on Saturday. "We have no competition with her (Gandhi)," he said.

Uttar Pradesh CM Mulayam Singh on Saturday announced that the Central Bureau of Investigation would probe the murders in Nithari after revisiting Opposition demands for days.

Opposition parties allege that state Assembly elections next year cannot be free and fair without President’s rule.
