In a shocking incident that was captured on camera, a JDS member Chennappa Kotiyala slapped an independent woman member in full view of those gathered during the local panchayat elections in Karnataka.
Elections were being held for Zilla panchayat president post in Koppal when the incident happened and the woman member, Vijaya Hiremath, has now filed a complaint for physical assault and outrage of modesty. She also sought expulsion of Kotiyala from panchayat.
According to sources, Kotiyala was angry that she extended support to Mahendrajala Chopra who is an independent candidate and is the president of panchayat.
Kotiyala, however, had earlier accused Vijaya of taking money to extend her support to Mahendrajala.
Former chief minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader H D Kumaraswamy has asked for a report on the incident from Zilla panchayat president. He said that he will get the report in one week and will take strong action.
