Shimoga: Politics over beef is not showing signs of subsiding anytime in the near future. Firing a fresh salvo, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader has openly threatened Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over eating beef.
Speaking at a public gathering, BJP leader and ex-councillor from Shimoga SN Channabasappa dared the Karnataka Chief Minister to eat beef at Gopi Circle in the city. "Has the Chief Minister ever slaughtered a cow? How dare he talk in public about consuming beef. If the Chief Minister has ever eaten beef, his neck will be on the line," he said.
According to a leading English daily ‘Deccan Herald’, S N Channabasappa, former president of the earstwhile Shimoga Municipality said, “By making such a statement, the Congress leader has hurt the sentiments of Hindus. We have all grown up drinking cow’s milk." He was speaking at a protest organised by the BJP against the chief minister’s remark on beef.
Reacting to the local BJP's leader's comment, Siddaramaiah said, “I am not scared of any threat. They are the ones who eat beef. If the threat is true, police may take action".
His statement comes after Siddaramaiah ridiculed the Centre's anti-beef policy saying that no one can stop him from eating beef. "I haven't had beef. But I will eat. Who are you to question? Whatever is comfortable for me, I will eat." he said referring to the BJP leaders' objection to beef consumption while interacting with the media in Bengaluru on Thursday.
The BJP and its affiliates have condemned Siddaramaiah’s statement.
