Mumbai: The Maharashtra Cabinet has cleared a cost escalation worth Rs 622 crore in the existing 147 irrigation projects across the state.

The decision was taken at an acrimonious Cabinet meeting, where the alliance partner, the NCP, led by Ajit Pawar attacked Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan for paralysis in decision making.

The cost escalation in irrigation projects has been the centre of a political controversy in Maharashtra with Ajit Pawar who was water resources minister for 10 years even having to resign in the wake of an expose of alleged irregularities.
