Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed has convened a meeting on Wednesday to look into the rise in incidents of civilian killings in the state.
The meeting comes after at least six civilians have been gunned down in the last three weeks by unidentified men, who are suspected to be terrorists.
Meanwhile, several separatist groups in Jammu and Kashmir have also called for a state-wide protest on Wednesday against the incidents of suspected terrorists targeting civilians.
On Tuesday, a police official had said that a breakaway faction of the Hizbul Mujahideen separatist guerrilla group, called Lashkar-e-Islam, was responsible for the killings of civilians in north Kashmir.
The police official said, "Lashkar-e-Islam is a split group of Hizbul Mujahideen and we have vital clues that the killings of former militants in Sopore have been carried out by this group," adding that "these are reprisal killings".
The north Kashmir police chief said they were hot on the heels of those responsible for these killings. He said the police has successfully neutralized the threat to telecom operations posed by the Lashkar-e-Islam and now it is proceeding to arrest and expose those behind recent killings of former militants in Sopore town.
