Chandigarh: Cricketer-turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu is all set to form a political party to contest the Punjab assembly elections in 2017.
On July 18, Sidhu, a senior BJP leader, has resigned from the Upper House reportedly due to differences with the central party leaders. Then, there were speculations that he might be joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) or Congress.
However, he didn't join any of these political parties and now sources said that he is all set to launch his own party in coming few days.
Former Indian Hockey captain Pargat Singh, MLAs Simarjit Singh Bains and Balwinder Singh Bains too joined Sidhu to contest against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Speaking to CNN-News 18, Simarjit Singh Bains said, "The name of the party is Awaaz-e-Punjab and soon we will officially launch it to contest all 117 seats in the state assembly elections. This will be a platform for deshbhakt (patriotic)."
"Awaaz-e-Punjab is only for honest and dedicated people to fight against corruption and drug menace in Punjab. Those having passion to serve people will be allowed in the party," he said.
Hitting out at Sidhu, SAD leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, "These people are opportunists. They are power hungry people and therefore they have decided to contest the election to be in the corridor of power."
