Mumbai: It’s D-day in Mumbai as India's richest municipal body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), goes to polls on Thursday.
Voting began at 0730 hours IST with almost 84 lakh voters expected to cast their votes.
Till 1300 hours IST 18 per cent polling was recorded in Mumbai and 20 per cent in Thane.
With hectic political campaigning till the last day, around 2,376 candidates are fighting for the 227 seats that form the BMC house.
The results will be declared on Friday at 1600 hours IST.
Meanwhile, celebrities came out to vote in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and appealed to Mumbaikars to do the same.
“It’s a right one must exercise. It’s very important not only cricketers, but also all Mumbaikars to come out to vote. Those who will finally get elected should work together for the betterment of Mumbai,” said Patil.
“We all have to out and vote or else we have not right to crib,” says Kiron Kher.
“We are all sailing in the same boat and we all sail and sink together,” said Akhtar.

All eyes will be on the key players Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, his estranged nephew Raj Thackeray who formed Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and the state's Congress Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
The Shiv Sena-BJP alliance has so far been the leader in three other corporations besides Mumbai. They also were voted to power last time in Thane, Nasik, and Akola.
But the Congress, too, has a strong presence in Maharashtra with strongholds in Nagpur, Amravati, Pune and Solapur. While Pimpri-Chinchwad and Ulhasnagar are controlled by the Nationalist Congress Party.
Nine other corporations in Maharashtra including Pune, Nagpur and Nashik are also going to polls on Thursday.
“There's no point in trying to appeal to people who're don't take their duty as citizens seriously,” said Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.
“I want a change in the infrastructure. The roads should be cleared,” said Dutt.
“This is the best way to contribute if you want things to be done,” said Sachin.
