PM cancels Japan visit, to begin Cambodia tour on Thursday
Manmohan Singh's tour was cancelled after the Japanese PM hinted at holding elections in December.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Japan was cancelled on Wednesday - a day before he was scheduled to leave. An MEA official said the tour was put off due to an internal development in Japan. He is, however, keeping his Cambodia visit plan intact.

"On November 2 we had announced about the PM's visit to Japan. Due to some internal developments in Japan, the summit has been postponed. There may be declaration of elections in Japan in the coming days. Japan's embassies are in touch for a convenient date for his visit," said MEA official Syed Akbaruddin.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda on Wednesday said that he was open to dissolving the lower house of parliament on November 16 and to hold elections in December if the opposition agreed to pass reforms to the electoral system.

Singh was schedules to leave for Japan on November 15 on a four-day visit for the annual bilateral summit and visit Cambodia for the ASEAN-India Summit and the East Asia Summit.
