Manmohan Singh apologised for Beni Prasad Verma's comments.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday apologised for comments made by Congress MP Beni Prasad Verma against senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani in the Lok Sabha.

"Yesterday (Tuesday) I was not there in the House but I have come to know that some undesirable incident has happened yesterday in the House. One of the members of our party has said something about Vajpayeeji. Those were not required and on behalf of my government I apologise to the House," Singh said while addressing the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Verma had made personal remarks against Vajpayee and Advani. He had made the remarks during the debate on Liberhan Commission report on Babri Masjid demolition in the Lok Sabha.

Following the remarks, BJP MPs went into the well of the House and started shouting slogans demanding that Verma apologise immediately for using unparliamentary language against its leaders which included a former prime minister of India.

The BJP also threatened that it would not allow Parliament to function till Verma apologised.

Though Home Minister P Chidambaram apologised on his behalf, the BJP MPs refused to accept it and sought an apology from Verma.

Even requests from Janata Dal (United) President Sharad Yadav and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, Verma did not offer a direct apology.
