New Delhi: Punjab Congress chief Pratap Singh Bajwa and state CLP leader Sunil Jakhar resigned on Thursday, amid suggestions that former chief minister Amarinder Singh may become the new state unit chief. The development comes days after party vice president Rahul Gandhi visited Punjab.

Congress high command will name a new Punjab unit head with Amarinder Singh being the frontrunner for the job.

Bajwa and Jakhar tendered their resignation to party chief Sonia Gandhi who accepted the resignations. Assembly polls in Punjab are scheduled in 2017.
