New Delhi: With parties coming out in support of Jawaharlal Nehru University students and politicians making a beeline at the varsity, Bharatiya Janata Party Amit Shah on Monday hit out at Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi over his visit.
Attacking the Congress vice president, Shah wrote in his blog that Rahul visited JNU despite alleged anti-national activities on the campus. "A despondent Rahul Gandhi cannot understand the difference between national interest and anti-national activities," Shah said.
Shah even said that Rahul should apologise to India for what he has done.
Shah questioned in his blog whether Rahul's visit to a place where 'anti-national' activities were carried out is the new Congress definition of patriotism. "Rahul's statement shows that there is no place for national interests in their thought process," Shah added.
The blog further said, "Irony is when Rahul advocates democracy by proving students who shouted slogans against India, right."
Taking a dig at him, Shah said that Rahul compared Indian government with regimes of Hitler and Germany but forgot Emergency was imposed by former prime minister Indira Gandhi.
The war of words broke after Rahul virtually drew parallel of Narendra Modi government with the regime of Hitler, accusing NDA of "suppressing" students' voice and telling students "don't let those bullies push you around".
Going hammer and tongs against the government, Rahul said, "People who suppress voice of this institute are anti-national. They are trying to crush the voice of the youth. I was in Hyderabad a few days back and these same people or their leaders said that Rohith Vemula was an anti-national."
There have been a series of protests after JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on charges of sedition for allegedly organising an event protesting against the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
