Rajasthan Hate Crime: Mamata Announces Rs 3 Lakh, Job for Victim Afrazul's Family
Afrazul Khan, a daily wage labourer from Bengal's Kaliachak in the Malda district, was brutally murdered and then set on fire in Rajasthan's Rajsamand district on 6 December 2017.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday announced Rs 3 lakh compensation for the kin of Afrazul Khan who was killed and set on fire in Rajasthan's Rajsamand district, and assured a government job for one of the family members.

"Very sad incident happened in Rajasthan. Afrajul Khan of Malda of our state was brutally killed. His family is totally helpless. As a small help to the bereaved family, our government has decided to provide Rs 3 lakh to the family and also one job to the eligible person of the victim's family," a statement by the CM read.

"Other help from the government will also be provided. I am sending our team of ministers and MPs to visit the family. We strongly condemn the heinous killing of a labourer from Bengal in Rajasthan. How can people be so inhuman," she had tweeted earlier and also raised the matter with the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Afrazul, who hailed from Bengal's Kaliachak in the Malda district, had been working in Rajasthan as a labourer. His body had reached Bengal and was to be handed over to his family on Friday evening.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that Afrazul had allegedly borrowed money from accused Shambhu Lal and was killed after he failed to repay the loan. The gruesome incident was recorded on camera.

Police, however, were also looking into a 'Love Jihad' angle after Shambhu Lal alleged that Afrazul had an affair with his niece and brought her once to his house in Malda.
