Lucknow: Protesting members of Shahjahanpur journalist Jagendra Singh's family have called off their protest after the state government assured them a compensation of Rs 30 lakh and jobs for two family members. The development comes after the family members of the deceased journalist met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. However, the CM has turned down the request for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the case.
The move comes after the Supreme Court pulled up the Central government and the Uttar Pradesh government asking them why a CBI probe should not be ordered into the alleged murder of the journalist. The apex court had asked the governments to respond to the plea seeking a CBI probe in the case.
Jagender Singh was allegedly set on fire by policemen on June 1 during a raid at his house at Vikas Colony in Sadar Bazar, Shahjahanpur. He died during treatment at a hospital in Lucknow on June 8. Singh's family claimed that he was burnt to death for his posts against Samajwadi Party minister Ram Murti Verma.
Ralling behind the minister, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had refused to act against Verma. The UP government government had said that Verma would not be removed till full inquiry into the alleged killing of the journalist Jagendra Singh finds him guilty.
Skirting questions on action against the Uttar Pradesh minister, the UP CM said had that his party had always fought wrongdoings.
The family of slain journalist had been on hunger strike demanding a CBI probe into the killing. The CM, however, added that "no injustice will be done with anyone".
Singh had reportedly written about the MLA in newspapers accusing him of nefarious activities regarding illegal mining and forced occupation of land, etc. The charges are said to have angered the Samajwadi Party leader. He also allegedly implicated Singh in a false case.
