The stand-off between University administration and agitating students continue in University of Hyderabad. With media and outsiders barred from entering the campus, students are using social media to reach out to the world. Apart from their prime demand of arrest and removal of vice chancellor Appa Rao, the students are fighting for release of arrested students and faculty members.
With University gates blocked for outsiders, the students at the Hyderabad Central University are turning to social media to voice their opinion. The students are recording videos of protests inside the campus and uploading them on internet. They are narrating their experiences of police crackdown in campus and exposing the brutality of University administration and police inside campus.
Putting the blame on Union HRD ministry for the crisis at university, the students are adamant on removal of Vice Chancellor Appa Rao and release of arrested students.
Attacking the Vice Chancellor, Raja, Rohith Vemula's Brother said “Central government is backing him. He gets full police protection and students demanding justice are in jail. Students are not terrorist/ anti national , they should be released"
Zuhail, a member of Joint Action Committee said “We are not allowed to roam freely. They are targeting specific students. We are not allowing us to speak to our lawyers"
As tension still prevails on the campus, basic facilities like food, water, internet and power supply has been restored in the hostels. The police force has also been reduced on the campus. Cyberabad police has denied all allegation of brutality by students, claiming measures were taken only to maintain law and order in University.
Meanwhile various human rights groups have condemned the police crackdown on protesting students at University. The state Human Rights Commission has also sought a report from the Vice Chancellor by March 26th in response to a petition alleging violation of human rights of students on campus.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi who went to meet arrested students in jail, condemned police for wrongly booking cases against students. Speaking to media Owaisi said “students told me they were brutally beaten in police van..this is wrong. They are being targeted because they demanded justice"
Already 27 students and two faculty members are in judicial custody. The Police has registered cases against at least 20 more students, who are yet to be arrested, under various sections for violence at Vice Chancellor's residence.
The classes are scheduled to resume from March 28 and the students do not plan to disrupt classes, but continue with their protests demanding justice. University administration, however, has also made it clear that they will not come under any pressure and not allow students to dictate their terms.
The bail order for arrested students will come on Monday. The university is trying to form a committee to have a dialogue with protesting students. Will have to see how students will go ahead with their protests and what all administration will do to ensure normalcy is restored in campus.
