Chennai: Tamil Nadu Assembly session has begun on Monday and will go on until September 29. Following her acquittal in the disproportionate assets case and her subsequent victory in the RK Nagar by-polls, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is back at the helm.

The opening session began with obituary references to former president APJ Abdul Kalam, former minister Senthur Pandian and music composer MS Viswanathan.

“TN assembly began today with paying tribute to former President APJ Abdul Kalam. The chief minister wants to act on prohibition. She has already closed 500 shops near highways," actor-turned-MLA Sharath Kumar of Samathuva Makkal Katchi said.

The 19-day assembly session is expected to be a stormy one with opposition parties including the DMK and the Congress expected to raise the issue of prohibition in the state. There have been protests by several parties demanding a ban on state-run liquor shops for several weeks. Keeping up pressure on the ruling AIADMK, Congress MLA Vijayadharni will be introducing a private member's bill to discuss the prohibition issue on Tuesday.

“I have brought in a private member bill to discuss in bringing prohibition as crimes and death rates have increased due to alcohol consumption,” Vijyayadharani, Congress MLA said.
